Mid-West 'Bat Wing' Cast Bronze Slip Shade Art Deco 5 Light Fixture
$2,850.00
Offered is this exceptional bronze Art Deco slip shade chandelier by the Mid-West Manufacturing Co. of Chicago, dating to the late 1920s. The fixture is constructed of heavy, solid cast bronze and exemplifies Mid-West’s higher-grade decorative production.
The five broad, flaring arms radiate from a deeply modeled central hub, the underside displaying crisp Deco geometry accented with stylized floral motifs. Rising above, the chandelier features a pierced vertical cage with elongated teardrop panels, richly detailed with geometric and foliate ornament. A matching pierced floral hanging finial descends from the body, completing the design.
Suspended by original chain from its original decorative two-piece bronze canopy with pierced fan and floral detailing, the chandelier balances bold architectural form with refined surface decoration. The overall design reflects the transitional Art Deco period, blending streamlined geometry with lingering floral influences characteristic of Mid-West’s late 1920s catalog offerings.
Fitted with five original slip shades with softly scalloped rims and molded vertical feathered ribbing, the chandelier produces a warm, even glow and retains its original visual integrity.
Measures: 19-1/2" W x approx. 42" L (can be shortened by up to 13" by removing chain)
Condition: Excellent and all original. The fixture has been fully rewired using the original Paulding brass sockets; the socket papers have been replaced, as the originals were dry and brittle. Very minor age-related wear consistent with careful use. This chandelier was removed from the home where it was originally installed. One shade has a tiny fleck on the side (see last photo); the remaining shades are free of cracks or chips. Minor surface wear to the finish of the shades from decades of gentle cleaning.
These are commonly referred to as Bat Wing or Clam Shell Slip Shades.
